Opera changes lives by bringing together artists, audiences, and community,
advancing the art of opera for today and for future generations. Founded in
1963 and currently in its landmark 55th season, the company is well known for its
45 World Premieres, 12 American Premieres and countless revivals, but did you know Minnesota Opera is also a local and national leader in opera based arts education?
Through education and outreach, Minnesota Opera serves people of all ages across the state. Minnesota Opera actively spreads the joy of opera and artmaking throughout the community with programs like these:
- StoriesSing! – A library story time for toddlers, opera style.
Our education team uses children's books to introduce classical singing
to our youngest community members.
- Music Out Loud – An intensive and long-term afterschool music program, utilizing the operatic art form as a foundation for learning. Through this program, Minnesota Opera engages and teaches all the components of Opera: music, design, visual art, theater, direction, composition, and production.
Project Opera – A top level training program for young singers in 4-12th grade with over 350 participants since its inception. The only program of its kind in the country, many Project Opera students go on to be accepted in leading music schools such as Juilliard School, Rice University, Oberlin Conservatory, and the Curtis Institute.
- Student Matinees and Dress Rehearsals – Nothing can compare to the experience of seeing a fully stage opera production live at the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts. During the 2017/2018 season we will bring 3000 students into the concert hall to enjoy live opera.
Resident Artist Program – Celebrating its 20th anniversary, this artist in residence program nurtures the next generation of talented and knowledgeable opera professionals and has already fostered the budding careers of 115 singers, pianists, conductors, and directors.
- Voices of Opera – A new opera choral program for active seniors ages 55+, serving over 200 individuals across the state of Minnesota. Voices of Opera is part of our industry-leading Creative Aging initiative.
Behind the Curtain and Opera Insights – These lectures led by local opera historians and Minnesota Opera artistic and education staff enhance the opera-going experience by educating audiences on the opera before the curtain rises.
These and other programs provided by Minnesota Opera bring Opera to All Ages – Participants not only learn musical concepts, develop important skills such as teamwork and cooperation, and strengthen social vitality - they gain joy, skill and a sense of accomplishment that comes from learning something new, regardless of experience or background. In Giving to Max, the difference you make is immeasurable.
Help us reach beyond the stage and have a lasting impact on all members of our community by donating to the max on November 16 or pledging your gift early for Opera for All Ages! Remember your gift will be matched for even more impact.
