Play a Leading Role in Supporting The Ivey Awards
In 2004, entrepreneur Scott Mayer recognized a missing element of the vibrant arts and cultural hub of Minneapolis-St. Paul. While the Twin Cities 80+ professional theaters represent the most prolific theatrical market outside of New York City, there was no dedicated event to recognize and celebrate this community and its supporters. Thus, the Ivey Awards were established with two primary objectives in mind:
- Celebrate and increase awareness of Twin Cities professional theater
- Create a celebration for ALL people who love Twin Cities' theater – those within the theater community and those in the audience
The Ivey Awards, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit since 2015, realizes its mission by annually engaging, honoring and convening artists, supporters and audiences who build a theatrical community rich with history and innovation. Since its inception, this 90-minute awards presentation and theatrical event is held annually at the State Theater before a sold out audience of approximately 2,100 theater enthusiasts, business leaders and performing arts professionals each September.
The annual Ivey Awards is just as much celebratory event and awards ceremony as it is reflective tribute, theatrical performance and evening of advocacy.
The Iveys were created to authentically honor and bring recognition to the outstanding work of the Twin Cities theatrical community in the holistic sense. Previous recognition has been presented in classic theatrical areas including choreography, direction, playwriting, sound design, acting and overall excellence. The more nuanced levels of theatrical achievement have been recognized with honors including emotional impact and innovative concept, affirming Ivey’s ability to react to how evaluators positively experience a production. The only two standing awards year-over-year are the Emerging Artist and Lifetime Achievement Awards - both nominated by Artistic Directors in the field. An average of 10 honors are given each year.
Iveys’ greatest opportunity is to unite, inform and advocate for the value of theater within the community.
The only organization of its kind in the 7-county metro area, the Iveys provides for connection across generations, professional experience and a very public opportunity to share the story of the Twin Cities theater community. Ivey recognizes that this evening provides the opportunity to transform theater-goers into theater-supporters, aspiring artists into emerging artists and build connections for important engagement between multiple industries.
Perhaps 2014 Emerging Artist and Advisory Committee member, Tyler Michaels, articulates the community need best:
"From the moment I transitioned from being a student to being a professional actor in the Twin Cities, I knew the Iveys had a significant impact on our arts community. It is the single event in the whole calendar year where theater artists of every level can gather together and celebrate our vibrant arts industry, not just with other artists but with our greater community. It gathers patrons, community members, supporters, casts, crews, producers, and on and on all to simply say “look at what a great thing we have. We must keep it alive.” It gives us a chance to reflect on all we have accomplished and feel the impact we have made here in the Cities. It makes us as artists grow, enhance and invest in our Twin Cities theater scene. The Iveys have strengthened our arts community so much so that without it, I believe our local theaters would be like hundreds of tiny ships lost at sea, aimlessly drifting about. The Iveys serve as our harbor, uniting all of us for the love of the artform and our connection to the greater Minnesota community.”
The success of the Ivey Awards over the past 12 years has relied heavily on the partnerships of each participating theater in providing complimentary tickets to 12 evaluators to each production. The Board of Directors and Advisory Committee volunteer their time, there are partnerships with Minnesota Theatre Alliance and Hennepin Theatre Trust in development, and key sponsors include Target, Best Buy, UBS, RBC, MartinPatrick3, Western Bank, Fox Rothschild, City Pages, Clear Channel Outdoor, MinnPost, Knock, Inc., Mpls. St. Paul Magazine, iHeartMedia among others.
The Iveys exist only because of the community that supports them, and it is clear that this community values theater, it's stories, it's players and it's impact.
