Everyone deserves a healthy smile!
Access to dental care – what does it mean? If you or I have a toothache, it means picking up the phone and calling our dentist. We have access to getting the problem fixed quickly. It’s not so simple for thousands of people living in our community who can’t afford dental care.
Leala, a first grader with painful cavities in almost every tooth, was falling behind in school. Tom, a farmer with lung cancer, couldn’t get the surgery he needed until treatment for his gum disease was complete. David was missing his front teeth and was rejected at every job he applied for. Fahria couldn’t find a dentist who would accept their family insurance and also needed an interpreter as she was still learning English. Jerica had so many cavities she couldn’t chew or drink water without pain. All of these patients had one thing in common — they did not have access to affordable dental care.
Community Dental Care intends to change these stories and we need your help! You may designate your gift to any program at any of our five clinic locations.
Eastwood Clinic — a clinic that will transform dental care in Southeast Minnesota, providing access to dental care for everyone, regardless of insurance. The new clinic will have 18 dental operatories and will offer comprehensive dental services, providing 35,000 patient encounters to more than 10,000 patients annually. It will also offer our nationally recognized preventive education programs and training for dental professional students, and will create 35 new, professional jobs for local residents. It will mean more appointments for emergency patients, shorter wait times for patients to get an appointment, and more timely preventive care for children. It will mean access to dental care for everyone.
Program to Improve Community Oral Health (PICOH)
— a program designed to increase access to oral health prevention and education, reduce early childhood cavities, and improve the knowledge of children and pregnant women regarding oral health care and nutrition. The core idea behind PICOH is that preventive and educational services need to be provided in a culturally competent, easily understood, family-friendly manner that encourages long-term behavior change. PICOH provides services through outreach, one-on-one education in a special dedicated family room, through our Minnesota Cavity Free Kids project, and our School-based Dental Sealant program (currently in 22 elementary schools). This will mean intervention for children at their most vulnerable ages. Last year, we reached over 15,000 children, pregnant mothers, and parents. With your help—
we will reach more.
Emergency Mini-grant Fund - to help destitute people without insurance or who are unable to pay for extreme dental emergency visits.
Student Training Program - support for cross cultural training of oral health professional students, nursing, and community health worker students.
We are humbled by and grateful for the extraordinary generosity of you — our supporters. Thank you for your kindness, compassion, and charity.
