We put food on tables in northern Minnesota!
The Bemidji Food Shelf serves 3,000 families living within Beltrami County and the Bemidji School District. We serve an average of about 70 families and disperse 5,000 to 6,000 pounds of food each day we are open. We purchase the majority of our food and the rest is donated by partner stores and individuals.
In 1982, a group of twelve Bemidji area churches joined hands to meet a critical need in our community by starting a small food shelf in downtown Bemidji. Since then, we have grown dramatically and are now in a large facility in the Industrial Park. Our board of directors is made up of seventeen area churches.
In 2014 we established the Food Shelf FARM to help provide fresh, nourishing produce to our users. In 2017 we harvested 11,000 pounds of produce for area families.
We currently have one full-time director, two farm staff, one part-time maintenance person, and hundreds of volunteers, most of whom are coordinated by member churches. We are especially grateful to the NCCC AmeriCorps program for its ongoing support.
We are a distribution site for the Nutrition Assistance Program for Seniors (NAPS), which provides a box of food once a month to about 120 qualifying seniors age 60 and over.
In addition to monetary donations, all community members are welcome to volunteer with us, as we are a small, efficient staff.
Please consider becoming part of our wonderful food shelf family!
