Our Mission & History

Urban Boatbuilders' mission is to empower youth to succeed in work and life. Through woodworking and experiential learning, our programs build confidence, provide career paths, develop positive relationships, and more. UBB was founded in 1995, after a small group of community leaders saw a lack of opportunities for youth to learn new skills through hands-on activities. Already passionate about woodworking and Minnesota's iconic boating culture, they started restoring and building canoes in their backyard, and eventually moved into a woodshop in Midway to teach their skills and knowledge to youth. Since then, Urban Boatbuilders has expanded its organization to address youth unemployment with a gateway into the trades industry, teach more projects such as longboards, and continue to uplift and inspire young people on their journeys towards success.

Our Programs

Urban Boatbuilders offers two main programs that teaches and shares the craft and joy of woodworking with young people across the Twin Cities metro and beyond. Our Apprenticeship Program provides paid job training to underserved youth, helping them build the skills to succeed in work, school, and life.  Our Partnership Program brings woodworking to the classroom to engage students who thrive through creative, hands-on education. Youth projects range from building boats, kayaks, longboards, paddles, cutting boards, and more.
