Safe Haven provides safety, space to heal, advocacy, and empowerment for women, children, and all survivors of domestic violence. Domestic violence is a long-time pervasive epidemic that impacts Americans regardless of geography, race, and socioeconomic status. Here in Minnesota, 1 in 3 women and gender minorities will experience domestic abuse in an intimate partner relationship. The story below highlights one such survivor ("Michelle") and how Safe Haven was there to support her:
Michelle considers Safe Haven "my light at the end of a very dark tunnel". She came to our Shelter to get away from an abusive husband, and our support groups provided her a place to share her experience, gain validation, and find acknowledgement. Safe Haven's comprehensive services supported Michelle for her entire journey from crisis management to a healthy life free from violence. More than 500 survivors and their children in the Twin Ports area just like Michelle come to Safe Haven Shelter every year, and over 1,500 use the legal advocacy and self-sufficiency support services at our drop-in Resource Center. Coming from all classes and backgrounds, these survivors share a similar and often paralyzing experience: living in a chronic state of fear. Safe Haven's safety, support, education, legal advocacy, and access to a variety of public services and benefits helps transform their lives from victims to survivors.
