Rakhma Homes: 40 Years of Compassionate, Inclusive Memory Care

For four decades, Rakhma Homes has been a pioneer in providing dignified, compassionate memory care in a warm, home-like environment. We started in 1984 with a vision that was revolutionary at the time—providing compassionate, person-centered care for individuals with memory loss within a real home in an era of rigid institutions. Today, despite years of evidence supporting the benefits of this model throughout the world, the U.S. is still catching up. Rakhma, though, remains at the forefront of this model, both as an advocate and an innovator.

Uniquely inclusive, Rakhma welcomes residents regardless of financial means. About 85% of our residents receive government assistance, and our doors have remained open thanks to generous donors who support our mission. Yet as regulations shift against small, residential providers, we’re facing new financial pressures that threaten our inclusive model, requiring us to rely on donors who share our vision of equitable, compassionate care for everyone to sustain this unique model.

As we look forward to 2025, with the help of a grant, Rakhma is making substantial investments to ensure our homes continue to meet the highest standards of care and dignity. Among other projects, we’re adding new “dementia-friendly” design enhancements to create even more supportive, engaging environments for our residents. These improvements, while essential, also come with a cost—one that we rely on community support to help meet.
