More Than New Kennels: Investing in the Future of Animal Welfare 

The Mower County Humane Society is embarking on one of the largest improvements in our organization’s history: replacing our aging dog kennel systems with modern, safe, and humane housing designed around the health and well-being of the animals in our care. 

This project is about so much more than replacing physical structures. It is about creating an environment where every dog who enters our shelter has the best possible chance to feel safe, comfortable, and supported while they wait for their forever home. 

Our current kennel systems have served our shelter for many years, but they are no longer meeting the needs of the animals, staff, and volunteers who rely on them every day. The existing textured plastic materials are difficult to fully sanitize, can become damaged over time, and do not provide the durability and safety expected in modern animal care facilities. 

The new stainless steel kennel systems will provide a cleaner, safer, and healthier environment for both animals and people. These updated spaces will improve sanitation, help reduce the risk of disease transmission, and create a more efficient cleaning process for staff and volunteers. They will also provide stronger, longer-lasting housing designed to serve the animals of Mower County for generations to come.

 Beyond physical improvements, this project focuses on the emotional well-being of shelter dogs. Shelter environments can be stressful, and thoughtful kennel design can make a meaningful difference. The new layout will allow dogs to have a more comfortable resting space while reducing visual stimulation from other dogs. Improved airflow, natural light, calming colors, and intentional design choices will help create a more peaceful environment for dogs as they transition through shelter life. 

The new kennel systems will also improve safety for the dogs themselves. Many shelter dogs experience stress behaviors such as jumping, digging, or chewing when they are overwhelmed. The new materials will reduce opportunities for injury while providing a more secure and comfortable space.

 For our volunteers and staff, these improvements mean a safer and more functional workspace. A well-designed shelter benefits everyone who walks through our doors — the animals, the people caring for them, and the community that supports our mission.

The Mower County Humane Society is a no-kill, all volunteer animal shelter in Austin, Minnesota.  The shelter helps hundreds of animals each year, but needs help in many ways.  We need more volunteers, especially in the areas of kennel cleaning.  Also, we need monetary donations in order to meet our ever-rising expenses.  Veterinary services is our largest expense.  In addition, we have dog/cat food and supplies, utilities, and other building-related expenses.  Please consider making a donation.
