Augsburg University Howling Bird Press Publishing Fund
Fundraiser for Augsburg University

Augsburg University Howling Bird Press Publishing Fund Join us in is raising money for Augsburg University.

Please help support production costs for Howling Bird Press, the student-run literary press of Augsburg's MFA in Creative Writing.

Howling Bird Press is part of Augsburg's MFA in Creative Writing program. This intensive, hands-on, student-oriented classroom practicum is part of the curriculum in the Publishing Career Concentration, which features master's-level coursework in the arts, craft, and business of the book trade.

Our GiveMN campaign seeks funds to help support costs associated with the editing, design, production, marketing, and distribution of book titles that win the Howling Bird Press Publishing Prize, an annual national competition for authors. This year (2017–18), students will be judging, selecting, and publishing the winning title in poetry. The manuscript-review process is currently under way. The winning title will be announced in early 2018, and the student-edited and -designed book will be released later in the year, complete with launch events at Augsburg and in the Twin Cities with the author.

The 2017 nonfiction winner was Still Life with Horses by Jean Harper, the 2016 fiction winner was The Topless Widow of Herkimer Street by Jacob M. Appel, and the 2015 poetry winner was At the Border of Wilshire & Nobody by Marci Vogel.

From some of Howling Bird's friends, these words:
  • "Augsburg College's burgeoning MFA in Creative Writing is a welcome and exciting addition to both the Twin Cities and the national literary scene. There is a palpable sense of community around the tremendous faculty and the talented students, and it's a program that focuses not just on writing but on the writing life. The concentration in editing and publishing through the student-run Howling Bird Press is exciting and unusual, and it gives an added experiential dimension to Augsburg's approach to creative writing." —JEFFREY SHOTTS, Executive Editor, Graywolf Press
  • "As a native Minnesotan and a former member of the Twin Cities publishing community, I hold a steadfast commitment to the mission of independent presses and the writers whose work they encourage, support, and publish. As an Augsburg graduate, I feel a strong connection to my alma mater and the educational opportunities and programs for which it is recognized locally, nationally, and internationally. Guided by seasoned faculty and experienced publishing mentors, Howling Bird Press offers an invaluable opportunity for students to experience firsthand the intricacies, challenges, and joys of creating and publishing quality literary work. It also reflects a new level of Augsburg's engagement with the rich heritage of Minnesota's literary-arts tradition, one worthy of support from all who value the priceless gift of the written word in our lives." —GORDON THOMAS, Thomas Publishing & Consulting, Vancouver, B.C., and Augsburg alumnus
  • "Having just read a piece called "Our Deep Reading Brains," published by Nieman Reports, I am more convinced than ever that the continuing evolution of an intelligent, wise, analytical, and educated civilization relies upon the pursuit of the arts and, in particular, literature. At a time when we are—all of us—on the receiving end of an onslaught of digitally driven, brevitized, click-bait-y information and content, it's critical to pay attention to and support the efforts of those whose work neutralizes the deteriorating effects of content acquisition through sound bites. Look no further than Augsburg College's MFA in Creative Writing graduate program and its experiential book-publishing endeavor, Howling Bird Press. Read, think deep thoughts, and pledge online to Howling Bird Press! —GARY JOHNSON, President, MSP Communications
