Presenting the Picnic Operetta! A harvest tradition of music, local food, and storytelling. An accessible, one-of-a-kind experience!
"It's the most magical afternoon I've had since childhood. The birds, butterflies, slight breeze and delicious morsels of food, communal atmosphere, and of course the fantastic performance by your company had me charmed beyond my expectations."
Each summer a team of adventurous performers, growers, and music makers have come together to create the Picnic Operetta. We've tackled the works of Purcell, Mozart, Handel, Beethoven and Offenbach and created a community tradition that is accessible, lively and fun for the whole family.
Performing in community gardens, farms and orchards, each story is infused with the magic of the garden by the chef-prepared creations served during the performance. It's opera and food and community.
The creative, musical and agricultural assets of Minnesota come together to create the Picnic Operetta. We are committed to presenting great in rural Minnesota and the metro, reaching audiences with a show that celebrates our shared assets.
All are welcome and no one is turned away from our outdoor performances. In 2017 we reached audiences of nearly 2,500 and employed nearly 30 performers, artists, chefs, and staff members and traveled more than 1,500 miles.
In 2018 we're taking a new production to greater Minnesota and the metro. Our 10th annual production will be a rooted in Minnesota history as we explore the history of taconite mining with an all-new production, Dr. Falstaff and the Working Wives of Lake County.
Help us raise $5,000 by the end of the year to make a 2018 tour possible!
Here's what audiences say about their experience with the Picnic Operetta:
"Joy! Boundless creativity! I love all of it, and what especially keeps me coming back is the culture of innovation, optimism and warm welcome. Being here makes my heart sing."
"Such fresh energy and creativity -- it raised my HQ (hopefulness quotient)."
“Wonderful show! Loved the combination of accomplished classical singing with zany creative fun... All sang beautifully, and I'm an opera snob!”
